When you bind off purl sts in knit the chain edge from the bind off faces toward the purl loops. When you bind the purl sts off in purl, that chain faces toward the knit side (away from you). As Julie said, since this bind off will become part of the underarm seam, it won't really matter but in general it's gives a more finished look to bind off "in pattern" (bind off purl sts with a purl bind off and knit sts with a knit bind off).
