Cotton can be heavy in a knit sweater (especially with cable work) and often the sweater grows in length. Youl could make the sweater slightly shorter than the original but certainly no longer than desired because the sweater will lengthen a bit on its own. I like seams to stabilize the front and back. They're not difficult to do and you may be surprised at how well the different techniques for seaming work out.
