The bar is the strand of yarn that connects stitches from the previous row. It may be more difficult to see in your case because you're so close to the cast on.
You don't have to do a lifted bar increase. There are others that will work like the M1A. There are videos for several increases on the videos tab at the top of the page, under Increases.
