Buying enough for a couple projects is a good idea if it's on sale. Make sure you buy suggested amount +1-2. Extra is always a good idea for a project. If you have some left it becomes part of your stash.

If you have no idea what you want to make here's a rough idea of yardage, but it's not perfect.

I'd stick to basic smooth yarn rather than novelty yarn since you're still learning.
