[Thanks for the pattern link. This afghan is knit back and forth in rows, not joined to knit a tube in the round. You'll use the circulat needle in the same way as you would two straight needles, turning at the end of the row and switching the needles in your hands. The circular needle is recommended because it will hold the large number of sts called for and won't put a strain on your wrists.
