I think this would be a great time to branch out and be your own designer! One book I would highly recommend would be Teach Yourself Visually: Knitting Design. It's a large paperback book. You may be able to save money by getting a used copy. I think this one may be available as an instant download ebook for Kindle or Nook. You don't need one of their ereaders. Both Amazon and Barnes and Noble have a free download for your pc.

I love history and watch documentaries all the time. My home state of Wisconsin was the number one state for producing wool for Civil War uniforms. It was a booming business here. The farmers raised Merino sheep because their many folds produced a lot of wool. So use Merino wool if you want to be authentic.
