Yeah, the skeins of yarn like that often have what I call yarn barf in the center. Reach in and pull that out. After that it should be fine.

Alternatively you can use the yarn from he outside of the skein, I prefer center pull skeins so I often rewind them myself. The bottom of this page has info for making a center pull ball.
