Not sure how this works, so maybe a more experienced knitter might have knowledge on it, but there is a simple pattern I know of that starts like this:

Cast on 5 sts
k2 Y/o K3

Somehow, you're supposed to do that, and work on the bias, increasing each row until you've reached the desired size and then decrease each row by beginning and ending each row with "k2 tog" until you're ready to bind off, then bind off.

It should look something like this sample I found on some random knitter's blog (got to love the knitting/blogging community!! )
