It is 7 times to get down to 75 stitches. You read it correctly. Did you do a guage swatch before you started? Having a different guage than the pattern calls for would explain having to use a lot of extra yarn and would explain why it seemed really big. If you did do the guage swatch, I don't know what to tell you.
