Dang, I just saw a book last night when browsing Barnes & Noble about convering crochet patterns to knit...or maybe it was the other way around. I didn't actually pick it up and look at it, but from the cover I guessed it was more about replicating certain types of stitches. Let me check the B&N site or amazon to see if I can find the book, and then maybe you can find it at the library.

It was this book, I was wrong about the conversion direction.

Maybe you can look through a stitch "dictionary" to find a knitting pattern that looks similar (if you have a picture of the item) and "reverse engineer" it.
