I do have one lead --
this yarn would knit to gauge when doubled. I got a ball in the bargain bin at the LYS and I'm going to swatch it and see how it feels. It comes in lots of yummy colors, and I was thinking about maybe doubling one of the multicolors with a coordinating solid color. Substituting a non-ribbon yarn has got to be tricky, though, because I'd still want it to be lightweight...and not many yarns that knit 3 sts/inch on 11s are very lightweight.
