Looks like an ordinary braid to me too.
The old girl scout trick is to tie off smaller bundles of yarn or string and then tie those together. I would anchor the braiding on something sturdy. A door knob would work well. You could use some small rubber bands to hold your bunches of yarn together at the bottom so nothing is flying around. Easy peasie stuff
