When I started I transferred stitch by stitch, but then I discovered that you can just use the DPN and start knitting. You'll have the DPN in your right hand the circ in the left hand.

I always have markers for the decreases so it's easy to figure out how many to put on the DPN, but if you don't use them you'll need to figure out how many stitches per needle.

Oh and do this on a knit only's easier.
