Some patterns are poorly written or have typos and this appears to be one of them. If it looks right the way you did it, you did it right!

This seems like inc on both ends of the 3 rows, *then* CO 3sts at the end of the next *2* rows, which will give you 6 extra stitches on each side. 12+14=26, so that shoud be right. I think....
