As you work the increases, you work them as they would appear if the pattern were bigger--expanding outward.
For example, if your pattern was
....xxooxxooxxooxxoo then on the increase you'd work it
...oxxooxxooxxooxxoox , then
..ooxxooxxooxxooxxooxx
xooxxooxxooxxooxxooxxo
