For the main body of a hat, usually a circular needle is fine (probably about a 16" circ would be the shortest you could comfortably use) but when you decrease for the crown of the hat you will have to switch to dpns, or switch to magic loop or using 2 circs when the stitch count gets too few to fit around the regular circular needle.
