The thing to remember w/ circular needles is that they circumference of the object you are knitting can be no smaller than the length of your needles. That's why knitqueen said you'd have to change to dpns to do the crown of your hat.
I prefer to make hats on dpns b/c really short circs feel weird to me but everyone has different preferences.
