I (and I might be doing it wrong ) just make sure that my yarn is in the opposite spot to where it is supposed to be when I start my row... ie. If i'm about to knit, instead of having my yarn in the back, I'll have it in front so when you wrap your stitch, your going over the needle creating a yo, the same for purl, I'll have it at the back instead of front (but bear in mind, doing a purl yo this way, instead of wrapping under then over, creates a smaller yo, so you might want to see how you prefer your yo's to look on purl rows)...
