I am not sure why this made a difference for me, but it did...I prevented both knit and purl ladders on dpn's by knitting and/or purling into the back of the first stitch of my rounds.
I'm guessing it allows me to tighten the yarn closer to the stitch surface and close the gaps...NO clue.
Maybe someone with more sock making experience than me can explain it?????
