If you are unsure of what the stitch is i have a little trick. It was once explained to me that if the stitch on the needle looks like it's wearing a scarf-it's a knit stitch and if it looks like it's wearing a noose then it's a purl
Everyone is right, you have to be able to tell what the stitch is and then you just repeat the same stitch.
