i think your needle choice can definitely make it easier. i find it really easy to knit without looking when i'm using my KP options. they just seem to slide into the stitches. i think i've tried it with bamboo, but it didn't last more than a few stitches. they're just too "sticky". now my options are all i knit with. but i only have sz. 7 tips until i place my next order, so i'm kind of limited in what i can knit.

it takes a little time until you can knit at any kind of speed without looking. it's kind of like learning to ride a bike. at first you really just want to keep your eyes on your tires. then with more confidence you go back and forth between your tires and the road. and finally you can keep your eyes on the road without even thinking about what your tires are doing. just give it a shot andstick with it, and you'll do fine.
