Help needed for a gift

Hello, everyone!

I don't know anything about knitting. However, I adopted an Angel at the Salvation Army website who is 12 years old and she would like the following knitting supplies for Christmas:

- Needles
- Yarn
- Instructional book

Can you point me in the right direction? I have no idea what to buy. I do know that for the yarn, I would like it to be very soft and cuddly.

Any help you can give would be much appreciated!

The Walmart I frequent has a Learn to knit kit with everything but the yarn. A skein of worsted weight yarn of your choice and that kit would be what she is asking for. So try the local Walmart or JoAnn Fabrics for the learn to knit kits.

If you have a Joann's, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or AC Moore near you, you can get soft yarn and needles there. They should have a 'learn to knit' kit which will have a booklet, needles and sometimes yarn, but there's lots of nice yarn to choose from. If you don't get a kit a medium weight yarn (should have a 4 on the label) is a good choice and a size 9 or 10 needle. Choose a smooth rather than fuzzy or furry yarn, and one in a lighter color so the stitches are easier to see. Even in good light, black or dark colors are hard to work with. A medium or light multicolored yarn is good too, and fun as the color changes every few stitches.

I teach knitting to middle school kids. The ones I work with tend to like bright colors, especially varigated, and it should be washable. School colors are popular too. I like to start them on short length needles - maybe 8 or 10 inches - which are sometimes hard to find, but SO much easier to work with than a very long needle. Very long metal needles tend to make school officials a little nervous, too!

The kit I bought myself came with two pairs of knitting needles (size 6 and 8), an instructional booklet with 10 different (easy) patterns, and a few other knitting accessories that are very useful. The only thing I needed to buy after that was yarn.

The kit was put out by Boye and the book was called "I Taught Myself Knitting." You may even want to include a note about this website and the recipient could join the forum to learn more.
