Joining

Hi all! I'm very new to knitting but have got all the basic stitches and techniques down...I'm (attempting) to knit a plush monkey, and am already confused on the first instruction. I've finished one piece, and then it says to break the yarn and start again on the same left needle. I'm ok with this. Then, having finished the next bit, after 10 rows, it says: "join pieces together on the next row as follows"... How am I supposed to join them together? I'm going to throw the lot out of the window in a minute!

It would help if you posted the instructions that come right after "as follows" so that we know what they are asking you to do. It sounds like maybe you're joining them by picking up stitches along the side of the original piece you knit ... ? I can't be sure though. If you post the next instructions I'm sure we can help you figure it out!

Hello! Yes I thought that as soon as I posted it...

OK, this is what follows:

"Join pieces together on the next row as follows:

11th row: Cast on 2 sts at beg, k19sts, inc 1st in the next st, inc 2sts at the end (41)
12th row: Cast on 2sts at beg, inc 2sts at end..."

And on it goes...

Ok, I'm trying to figure out where your stitches are oriented, lol.

When you break the yarn and "continue on same left needle", have you cut the yarn part way across a row and are then continuing to work only on the rest of the stitches? Or did you cast on new stitches to work with?

I just broke it and will now start on the same needle with new yarn, casting on again. That's what I thought anyway?

is there a link to this pattern? This sounds funny.
I imagine the description as follows:

you make a piece, I call it flap 1. Then you break the yarn. You cast on again (doing that on the same needle, ignoring flap 1 for the moment).
now you knit some. That makes flap 2.

Now you have the option of just working across flap 1 and flap 2. The outcome would look something like this:

that is just my guess. But a name of pattern, the link even, or maybe a description of which part of the monkey you are on (what a sentence???)... that would help.
