Easy Shawl Pattern

Hi,
I started knitting a shawl. Right now, I don't have too many rows so it looks like a small rectangle.
The pattern I have will basically make it look like a very long scarf. I don't want that.

Can anyone help me? Obviously I don't want cashmere and I'm using yarn, but it's the style I'm looking to copy. Right now I have 60 stitches on the needle and it's a small rectangle. Any ideas?

The easiest way to get the look of that cashmere shaw would be toactually knit a square, but put a slit in it that runs from one side to teh middle. This slit is where your head goes and the flaps would drape over your arms. I think in the photo you have linked that they rounded the edges a bit rather than making a true square.

Depending on which way you want the rows to go you could work the rows horizontally (bottom to top), then when you hit the split put half the stitches on a holder while you work the rest. BO. Then pick up the held stitches and knit them to the end.
If you want the rows to go vertically, then work the rows to the middle (right to left on diagram). BO the first half of the next row. Knit to the end. Turn the work. Knit back. Then cast on however many stitches you just bound off. Turn work and continue knitting to the end.

That would be more of a cape not a shawl. Are you on Ravelry? If not you should join..it's free and look up capes. There weren't many free ones, but there were lots you pay for. Some were short, but could be knit longer, too.

On ravelry you can search 'circular' or semi-circular in the shawl patterns and would come up with several that are cape-like. Even the full circle patterns can often be knit with half the sts so they come out as a half circle.

You might also want to look at some faroese shawls. They have shoulder shaping that makes it stay on your shoulders better then juat a triangular shaped shawl.
