Stitches and pattern aren't matching!!

Help!

I've just started this pattern:

I cast on 111 stitches, worked rows 1-5 of the drop stitch pattern, then repeated rows 1 and 2 6 times. At that time, I had 75 stitches on the needles. The pattern then calls for a repeat of row 3, which I did, then says I should NOW have 75 stitches, but now I have 51 instead. Did I do something wrong or is the pattern screwy?

I'm not sure, but it seems to me that as written you are only to do rows 1 and 2 (6 times) followed by row 3 once. Then you should have 75 stitches.
I don't see anything about doing all 6 rows of the drop stitch pattern. In doing so, you worked row 3 twice which resulted in the fewer stitches.

I have to disagree - in saying to work dropped stitch pattern I would take it to mean all the rows of that pattern, then do the repeats as stated.

Sorry I can't help with the lost stitches issue, my brain is too tired to try to figure that one out right now.

Having read it again I think you are correct. You should do the pattern once, then repeat rows 1 and 2, then row 3.

But it almost reads that the 75(83) is what you should have before "working" row 3 that last time. As opposed to work row 3 then have 75(83).

As always, keep going with the pattern and see what happens.

Work rows 1 and 2 six times (for a total of 12 rows). You should only work row 3 once. It brings you to 75 sts when you have finished working row 3, From the gauge, 16sts per 10cm, this gives you about 46cm across the width of the sweater which is what the diagram is showing (23cm for a half width or 46cm across).
I love the idea of the dropped st in the band at the bottom edge, should be very pretty.

I double checked on the German pattern version (I think, that is the original).
That does say:
rows 1-2 6 times, than row 3 one time.

Does that help you?

For the sleeves you do the whole drop stitch pattern by repeating a few sequences of row 1 and 2, then the other rows as instructed. That is why there are more lines, than you work here.

The comparison between the instruction for the front and the sleeve eradicate the doubt!

When they say "work the drop stitch pattern", they mean: now follow those instructions (not the main pattern (st st)) and then they tell you which rows of that pattern you do how many times.

Thanks to everyone! I was anxious for a reply, since I was afraid to move forward before I got a second opinion, but as soon as I got that first reply, I went ahead and frogged it and did rows 1 and 2 six times, then row 3 once. It looks more like the picture now than it did before I frogged it. Thanks to everyone! It didn't even occur to me to translate the German part of the pattern. I guess I just assumed it would say exactly the same thing. You know what they say about when you assume... :-)
