Pattern mistake? Or is it just me?
I am attempting to make the Morgan English Driving Cap I found on knitty.com.
Here is the link http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall08/PATTmorgan.html

At the end of round 2 the pattern says you should have 12 stitches. then round 3 reads like this: K1, m1R three times, K2 then says you should have 16 stitches. What am I not seeing here? If you only increase with the m1R three times how could you increase by 4 stitches (from 12 to 16). The mext row does the same thing-increases m1R three times and goes from 16 to 20 stitches. I've tried emailing the person who wrote the pattern but haven't had a response. Hoping someone can help.

Thanks very much!

Round 3 actually has a fourth make one in it:
"Round 3 K1, m1R, [k3, m1R] three times, k2. 16 st" so there's an increase of 4 sts. The same for round 4.

Ok Wait-I thought I had it but aren't the instructions in the bracket for the size L and the one before it not bracketed for the size M?

That's the way I would read it, too.

That's what I thought too but when you really look at the pattern I really don't think that's the way it's written. It looks like what's in the brackets is what she wants you to do 3 times in the row but doesn't relate to a size. It looks like the pattern is only written for one size but she doesn't specify if it's the med or large although under the "size" heading it says M [L], which is why I assumed what was in the bracket was for the large, but in trying the pattern if you do that only on round 3 you don't end up with 16 stitches. Which also brings me to if the pattern is supposed to be for 2 sizes why is there only 1 number at the end of each round for how many stitches you would have when completed the row. If you have 2 sizes shouldn't there be an indication for how many stitches you would have for each size? Sigh, Sigh. I'd really like to make this and believe it or not I've been a knitter for years but this pattern has me stumped.

Okay, I've looked at the pattern. What salmonmac posted previously is correct. You're repeating the brackets, the reason there's only one set of directions is because you're starting from the top (crown) and knitting down. So since the top of the hat would be the same for any size there's only one set of directions. It looks like the instructions start differing much later on in the pattern. Starting at "Shape front of hat body:" on Round 23, but lets not get ahead of ourselves.

It's a confusing use of brackets for both sizes and repeats. Better to use the parentheses and brackets or some other designation. There is the comma before the bracket in round 3 (as opposed to say
Round 23: [K8, k2tog] 2[1] times, k54[74], [ssk, k8] 2[1] times. 90[92] sts). But it's subtle and makes you feel more like a grammar student than a knitter.
As you picked up too, there's only one number for total sts at the end of these first rows.
Cool hats! I'd love to see a picture when you're finished.

Wow! Thanks everyone for helping me figure this out! This morning I received an email from Anne Kuo Lukito-who wrote the pattern and I'll copy and paste her response:

it's all the same until the short row shaping. and when you start shaping the body/brim area.

I'm off to my needles! Thanks again all!

Oh Duh! NOW I see it! Guess I should have done it instead of continuing to read it over and over! Thanks so much for clearing the fog!
