Thumb gusset for mittens?
I am making basic mittens. I have knit 3 inches of K2P2 on 3 double pointed needles. The next step says

Divide sts for palm: 16 sts on #1 needle
8 sts on #2 and #3 needles.
st st for 1"

After I divide the stitches do I continue working on the round for 1 more inch? and then what do I do next?

The pattern says:
Thumb gusset: for right mitten K 1 sts
for left mitten, K 13 sts
For both, place marker, M1, K2, M1, place marker, finish rnd

I do not understand how to do this. Could someone explain?

After you divide sts onto separate needles, continue working in the round for 1" more and then follow the instructions for the thumb gusset.
Thumb gusset: for right mitten K 1 sts, place marker, M1, K2, M1, place marker, finish rnd. That is, k1, place marker, increase 1 stitch (by picking up the bar between sts or by your favorite increase or see videos at top of page, Increases), K2, increase one stitch, place marker and continue to knit the round.
For the left mitten, K 13 sts, place marker, M1, K2, M1, place marker as described above.
