must be a mistake! "wisdom yarn easy socks"
Pattern says: Sl 1, p17, p2tog, p1. Turn
Knit 10.
(BUT there are 20 sts on the needle)
Next line: Continuing with same needle, pick up and knit 17 sts along the left side of the heel.
This just doesn't figure.
Has anyone made these socks and run into this error? How to correct?

I think this must be the pattern: http://www.yarn.com/product/wisdom-y...-free-pattern/

If it's a mistake, it's a consisten one. It occurs in all 3 sizes. That said, I don't see how you can pick up until you get to the end of the row. So knit 20sts, pick up along the left side of the heel, knit 17 instep sts on needle 2, 17sts on needle 3 and pick up along the right side of the heel onto needle 4. Knit 10 of the heel sts from needle one onto needle 4 and you'll have the correct number of sts distributed across the 4 needles.

Oh thanks so much! Yes, that's the link (sorry, Jan, for not including).
salmonmac it looks like you figured it out.
I also thought that might be the solution, but wasn't brave enough to try.
Thanks again! ... I was just about to abandon ship! Karen

I would like to know if the heel of this sock http://www.yarn.com/product/wisdom-y...-free-pattern/
should be knit so the fabric is reinforced
Heel:
Row 1: *Sl1 purlwise, K1 repeat from * to end
Row 2: Sl1 purlwise, p to end
Repeat these rows 34 times

My question: should the yarn be held in front when slipping purlwise, then slipped to the back to knit?
I've tried it and it definitely gives a thicker heel -- but the pattern doesn't say to do this.
Thanks!

When you slip purlwise (or knitwise) that only refers to how the needle is inserted into the stitch, has nothing to do with where the yarn is. So leave the yarn in back and you're ready for the knits after it. Putting the yarn in front leaves the strand in front of the stitch - sometimes this is done as part of a design, but probably not for socks.

eta - leave the yarn in back on the knit row, it can be left in the front on the purl row.
