making own needle video

did i miss something or does it not show how to make circular needles. that is whatshe meant by cables isn't?? circulars are limited around here. everyone seems to sell the same size. also some patterns give just the mm size of needles and not the #... what should i do? and what exactly is the mm number?

I don't think you can make circular needles. When I hear cables in knitting, I think of knitted cables, as in aran sweaters, etc. There are needle sets with interchangeable cables and points to you can have a wide variety available to you.

Every needle has a number, 1,2,3, etc. the mm size is the measurement of that size in millimeters. Sometimes a pattern will give mm size because different countries have different needle size numbers. Newer straight needles have the mm size on the head of the needle, and most knitting books have a conversion chart. I'm sure someone around here knows a site that will list them, also.

I find that I can get the circular needle sizes I want easiest on line, as all stores do not always have them available or in stock.

To be frank, I have had mixed results. So far I have made and used #10.5 circulars and used them to knit a bag I felted. I would still like to improve the join. But given the cost of large guage circulars, I will continue to work on it. I did break down and buy some addi turbos (#5) for a sweater -- there really is nothing faster!

I'm on a fixed income - I do what I can to conserve all available money for yarn

I googled these Addi Turbos. The price is slightly appalling, can you tell me if these are worth the higher price or strictly a luxury item? What makes them so 'fast' as you said?

They are light in your hands and the stitches just fly!. They don't cling to the yarn and I've never used circulars that were so flexible and where the join was as smooth. I've knitted this sweater before with aluminum needles. The addi's were much faster and easier. Just MHO, but I think they were worth it for this project and because I use that size needle for a lot of my knitting.

But you're right they are pricey -- I won't be buying them again anytime soon :rollseyes: I have heard that there are circulars that have all these features and are much less expensive. I'd love to know about them. Addi's could bankrupt you!
