knitting socks
I am knitting my first pair of socks on double pointed needles. I am using a Ann Norling pattern and I have come to the part where I have to divide stitches for the heel. I am to put on 24 stitches on the #1 needle and then 12 stitches each on #2 and #3 needles. I am not sure what needle should be #1 and what needles should be #2 and #3. I then have to work back and forth on #1 needles as follows. Row 1 (right side) *Sl1,K1* rep between*across. Row 2: Sl1, P rem sts across and work 24 rows. You will have half the # of slipped sts making it easy to cound. End after last sl1,k1 row. I would really appreciate anyone's help to decipher this. Thanks

Kathryn, it sounds like your pattern is similar enough that this will be helpful:

Sock Class: The Heel

Great photos and explanation of all that heel stuff

Thanks for all the help. I still am unclear about 1 thing. In step 5, it says row 2 : Sl1,P across (slip only the first stitch, purl the rest ( including the slipped stitches from Row 1. ) I don't understand the part about including the slipped stitches from row 1. Thanks again.

Just slip the first stitch, and purl all the rest. The ones you slipped will look a little different, but no worries. :D
