Help!!!!!

I'm going nuts trying to figure this out :XX: Making my first blanket and I got the mitered square down but how do I connect the #2 sq that goes on top of it. The directions say with Main color pick up 12 stictches then with same needle cast on 13 stitches and ..... does anybody get this I can't figure out how the 2 squares connect.....Is it even possible on straight needles...my circulars are on the way so i'm trying to practice with straights.....ughhhh I need an illustration....I'd love all the help I can get and am on my way to the library to see if I can find some knitting help in the books.....Thank you soooo much

It sounds like you when pick up 12 stitches from an existing square and then cast on an extra 13, you're attaching to half the square. I suspect that somewhere down the road, you'll pick up on those 13 cast-on stitches after they've been knit.
