stockinette in the round help!?!?!

oooooohhhh, i need help.

i am trying to make an old school (SS and CoS) style scarf (hopefully, eventually, one for each house). i've got my circular needle, and for some reason, this isn't looking right to me, and i've ripped it apart three times now.

i think i might be doing something wrong but have no one to show/tell me in person- but i dunno. here's what i've been doing:
~casting on (duh)
~knitting one row to the marker
(here's where i'm thinking something isn't right)
~switching to purl a whole row, to the marker again, rinse, repeat.

i'm not supposed to flip the piece and work over what i've just knitted, am i? because i haven't been, but it looks like it's ribbed horizontally. not the look i'm going for. can anyone point me in the right direction?

is it telling you anywhere to cast on and join and make sure your stitches aren't twisted? Most work done in the round will tell you to do that.

also this pattern seems to be telling you to work flat. Usually when something is done in the round it will talk in rounds. when it is worked flat it will talk in rows.

if you're knitting in a round then you wouldn't need topurl to get stockinette... now you got me confused... if you're purling aren't you supposed to just turn it and go back they way you came...? INGRID!!!!!!!!!!!

You should only knit to get stockinette in the round, since you're only working on one side.

So if in fact, you've joined and are working in the round, just knit. No purling necessary.

i knew i was doing something wrong!!! geez. leave it to me to get even the simplest things all messed up

Ok, so if I want to knit a 1x1 rib in the round, is it done the same as doing a rib (k1, p1) when it's knit flat?
I find the more I think about knitting in the round the more confused I get :D

If you are doing k1, p1 rib in the round, you do k1, p1 on all the rounds. Knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches. If you were knitting flat, it would be k1, p1 on the first row and p1,k1 on the second, and so on...
