stupid ? for the day - stockinette/stocking/garter stitch
I've been sparing you all my little dumb questions, so here's one for old time's sake.

Is there a reason that these stitches have those names? of course, i think garter belt and stockings, but were these really the stitch patterns used to create these items back in the day, hence giving them this name? i googled but had no luck.

thanks!

Good question, I don't really know either. My guess on "stockinette/stocking" though is because it's the primary stitch used for stockings/socks.

People did used to knit those long white stockings, so that's probably where stockinette came from. Maybe garter was knit at the top to make them stay up better or something?

I read *somewhere* that it's all related to knitting socks/stockings. Back 100s of years ago {when it was nearly all men knitting}, for stockings they would use stockinette for the body part of the stocking, and the garter stitch on the top to help hold them up. I am going to have to find that website again because it had all kinds of interesting tidbits like that.
