what is a twisted stitch

My pattern states to "twist a stitch" to prevent a hole--(knit stitch), does this mean to knit into the back loop?

Are you working with one color? If so, then you knit into the back loop.

Is it intarsia? Then you hold your working yarn over to the left and bring the new color from under it to knit or purl. Do this on each row and it will twist.
