Best method to cast on for 400 stitches

I saw a fantanstic scarf on Knitty Gritty yesterday that I wanted to try. However I have to cast on 400 stitches. What would be the best method to use? I have to purl the next row after casting on.

Need size = 10-1/2
Yarn = 1-3-4oz/50g/108yd
Gauge = 20sts and 36 rows = 4"

I was thinking the long tail method...but if I have to use 1/2-1" per stitch...wow! That's a pretty long tail.

Can someone help? Thanks!

My suggestion would be to use two balls to cast on, or use the inner end and outer end of the yarn. This way you won't run out of tail. Also, use a long circular needle.

So if I use the inner end and the outer end, when I'm done casting on then I would just cut the tail end to continue. Is that correct?

When casting on a large # of sts, I always place a marker every 50 sts so if I lose count I don't have to count all of the sts.

Rebecca is smarter than most of us.... I place a marker after every 20, and use a different colored marker for each hundred.

You could also knit the sts on, but it would probably take longer.

My mom made this scarf and after casting on and knitting it, it sat on the needles forever because she was dreading binding off. So I bound off for her.
