Baby blanket pattern

I am really new to knitting, and I'm looking for a simple baby blanket, preferably with nothing to complicated. I was going to knit the whole thing in Garter stitch, but have been told that it might turn out very thin and 'flakey'.

I have some chunky wool, and was considering maybe putting a 5 row border around the main body of garter stitch. Any suggestions which stitch I should use for the border?

Or does anyone have any better ideas?

Please help a newbie with a creativity problem!

I'm in the process of knitting a baby blanket (its my first knitting project). I've tried a few patterns, and have had trouble with them so what I'm doing is :

K 10 rows of a border
Row 1. K10, P across, K10
Row 2. K across (alternate rows 1 and 2 for 10 rows of stockinette stitch)
K 6 rows
repeat pattern of rows 1 and 2 then 6 k rows until desired length then K 10 rows of border

Its really easy and goes fast, and it looks good so far. I don't have too much left and I started a little over a week ago!
