Cable needles?

I want to try to knit cables. My question is do I have to go and buy a cable needle, or is there anything else that you all use? Anyone have a trick to I can start to practice or do you suggest I get a cable needle??

I lose my cables all the time so I've used a DPN before or a pencil.. anything that I can get the stitch on.. and I've even made some out of the dow rods too... I can't keep up with cable needles at all...

I use half a bamboo skewer for mine. Works great and super cheap!
