First, thank you, everyone.
I learned to knit when I was about 9--just the knit stitch, from a friend's mother. I guess I got a 'how-to' book at some point and taught myself the rest. I knit on and off as a teenager, an expectant mother, and a new mother. Then I stopped, except for the occasional baby item, for years.
I picked it up again about 3 years ago when my grandson came home wearing a sweater that his great-grandmother knit for him. I told him that I knew how to knit, he asked if I would make him a sweater, and once I got needles and yarn back in my hands, I haven't quit.
Maybe it's because I'm self-taught, or that I learned so young, I've never been afraid to try something I liked, so I went for it. Not always successfully, but

you learn with each new project.
