They want your increased stitches to be knit as if they were a part of the pattern originally. Your pattern now is K3 *p1, k7, rep from * to last 4 sts, p1, k3 so on your first row after the increase, you'd work k4 at the beginning and the end, then k4, k6, k7 at each edge. After you have 7 knits at each end, you'll make a purl at each end, then start again with the knits until you have all the stitches you need.
