This pattern is confusing

PATTERN STITCH
Row 1 (WS): Sl 2 WYIF, * (k1, p1) twice in next st (4 sts made from 1), k4 tog, rep from * to last 3 sts, (k1, p1) twice in next st (4 sts made from 1), p2 – 43 sts.
Row 2: Sl 2 WYIB, purl across row to last 2 sts, k2 – 43 sts.
Row 3: Sl 2 WYIF, * k4 tog, (k1, p1) twice in next st (4 sts made from 1), rep from * to last 6 sts, k4 tog, p2 – 40 sts.
Row 4: Rep Row 2 – 40 sts.
Rep these 4 rows for Pat St.

Okay, I was premature in ending my last question because I went back to read the pattern and don't understand row #1 specifically. What does 4sts made from 1 mean.

When you k1, p1, k1, p1 in the one stitch, you will have made 4 out of one.

They want you to K1, P1, K1, P1 all in the same st. So K1, don't slide off the needle, purl into same st, don't slide off the needle, knit again into that same st, don't slide off the needle, purl again into that same st, and NOW slide it off the needle.
