multiples??

I'm venturing beyond basic knit/purl patterns for the first time with a shrug that uses several different lace patterns. I was doing pretty good 'til I came to this
"The next lace pattern is a multiple of 4 plus 2 for 1 knit stitch at the beginning and the end. Increase or decrease on the last garter row at either end to achieve a multiple of 4+2"

What does this mean?

a multiple of 4+2 means you need to have a number of stitches that equals:

4 times (whatever) + 2

so, you would increase or descrease your number of stitches to get one of these numbers:

4x1 + 2 = 6
4x2 + 2 = 10
4x3 + 2 = 14
4x4 + 2 = 18
4x5 + 2 = 22
4x6 + 2 = 26

etc, etc, etc....
