returning to knitting

What a great website! I am a returning knitter and have forgotten a few things over the years. I thought I could just pickup and begin knitting but to my brain is not helping me.
I am trying to begin a shawl that does increases with a selvedge stitch. Can anyone help me here?

Selvedged stitch is usually just for the edges of a project right? Are you sure the increases are selvedge stitch? Or do you mean that you need to know how to do a selvedge stitch and how to decrease? Selvedge stitch is when you either slip or knit a stitch at the beginning and end of each row. You would do the increases on the stitch just inside the selvedge sts.
