Stupid yarn question...
I bought some yarn recently at my LYS and they wound it for me. Normally, I see the end sticking right out of the center. But on this one, what is sticking out of the middle is a very long loop. I'm tempted to pull it to see if the end is stuck in there.

I guess the worst thing that could happen is that I would have to wind it into a ball. Shall I give it a yank?

That's probably the end. I had a lot of hanks of Manos Del Uruguay wound for me and there was definitely a loop. Don't worry, if you do the wrong thing, the knitting police won't arrest you!

Yeah, no knitting police!

I'm pretty sure that is the correct end so go for it!

I wound one skein at home and had the same thing happen...
I've got a long loop from the center. The other end is on the side.

I'm confused!

I always use the yarn from the side when it's been wound into a cake... I only pull from the center if I buy a skein of yarn ready to go...
