"doubling" a pattern question..

My question is regarding the pattern shown above. I hope you can see it because I've had problems in the past where I can but others can't.

QUESTION 1:
I want to double the casted on stitches to 24. The pattern is for 12 stitches.
Does that mean for Row 1,3,5,7: K4,P4,K4 work 12 stitches in garter and so on...instead of K2,P2,K2 work 6 stitches in garter stitch.....

QUESTION 2: The bolded section is what is in question.
Why does the pattern say Row 1,2,5,7: K2,P2,K2 then work 6 stitches in garter. Garter stitches and knit stitches are the same. Why don't they just add the k2 + 6 garter sts and say K8 instead?

If you can't see the image you can click on

Thanks for your help,
Heather

I cannot see the pattern so I'm answering blind ...

Question 1.) you could work it the way you say - or
you could k2, p2, k2, then 6 stitches in garter , then k2, p2, k2, six sitches in garter.

or you could k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k12

(I can't see what the pattern *is* so can't tell you which would be most logical.

Question 2 - the reason they say that is that on the return rows, you will knit the garter stitches, but the rib stitches (the k2, p2, k2 section) you will purl the knits and knit the purls.

Yes, you can double the number of sts and do the pattern repeat of 12 stitches, twice. No need to double the sts within the pattern unless you want to make each `rib' wider.

I just wanted to point out that the pattern does not say to cast on 12 sts, but that it is a "multiple" of 12 sts. So I would think that you follow the pattern as stated (e.g. K2, P2, K2, work 6 sts in garter) and repeat however many times needed across the row.

Casting on 24 stitches will make for a very skinny item. You're making a sort of basketweave type pattern, so you dont want to make it 12 garter stitches instead of 6...work what is written in multiples of 12...

So it would be k2, p2, k2, then 6 stitches in garter , then k2, p2, k2, six sitches in garter....and then do it again if you wanted 36 stitches and again if you wanted 48, and so on. Doubling in the middle of the pattern would make your "weave" patter very uneven.

The reason it doesn't say K8 instead of K2, 6 stitches in garter stitch is to separate the two sections of the pattern (I assume).

Hope that helps.

the 12 stitches it asks you to cast n is for one repeat of the pattern.
when you say you want to double the pattern, do you mean you wish to enlarge to pattern, or that you wish to do more than one repaet of it. (one reapeat is a horizontal patch next to a vertical patch with a vertical followed by a horizontal above it.)

If you where simply enlarging then yes you would do k4 p4 k4 12st garter. If you are adding a repeat, then you would k2, p2, k2, 6st garter, k2, p2, k2, 6st garter.

What are you using the pattern for?
BTW. the picture acompanying the pattern shows 2 1/2 repeats of the pattern (aproximately)

THANK YOU EVERYONE! That's exactly what I needed to know

Heather

p.s. there's a grid pattern as well as specific directions and it's done for 12 stitches. that's why I was wondering if I can double it.

I uploaded the image of it at

The `grid' pattern is also known as a chart and shows a diagram of your knitting. It's the same as the text instructions. I'm still confused if it's the pattern repeat you want to double (as in doing the 12 st pattern 2 times) or double the pattern stitch (double the number of stitches within the repeat, as in k4 p4, k4, garter 12)
