Garter Stitch?

I'm new at knitting and the pattern is now calling for a garter stitch -- can someone please tell me how to make a garter stitch? Thanks!

It was a campaign to knit mini-Christmas socks that many of us did before Christmas last year. The socks were sent to a woman who's son is in the service in Iraq and she filled them and sent them to him to disperse to the soldiers.
