Help With Beanie,

I recently made a simple little hat, knit in the round, called The London Beanie (link). It's cute, but it is wrinkled/rippled around the top part where the decreasing starts, rather then flat against the head. I am not sure what to do to fix it. Any suggestions?

Looking at that pattern I can kind of understand why. You're doing decreases every round. When I have done that it often results in that sort of uneven looking top.

What I normally do is start the decreases a little earlier and only do them every other round. They seem to come out much better that way for me.

This page seems to give me a nice fitting crown.
Just work your pattern up to the decreases and then use what this page says after you plug the numbers into it.

Did you try blocking it? I usually do my decreases every other round, also.

Okay, so when you put it that way, I suppose it's not going to end up on a fashion mag cover. It's nothing fancy, but it's simple, easy, and looks great. And you can do anything with it. If you pair Patons Divine and an eyelash yarn and knit it on size 10 needles, you end up with a beautiful ladie's hat. In fact, it's been the pattern that keeps on giving. Between my grandmother and myself, I think we've made nearly a dozen. Everyone that sees a finished one wants one of their own. And they go great paired with the scarf pattern found here. (I like to co 36 or 24 sts instead of 16 and knit it extra long.) You can see pictures both of the versions of the pattern and of the scarf in my 'My First FOs' post.

Materials:
About 150 yds of 2 colors of Worsted Weight Yarn or 300 yds of one color
(Yarn will be used double throughout.)
1 pair 16" #10.5 needles (or size needle to get gauge below
1 set #10.5 Double point needles
Finished Measurements:
Width: 20" (Medium)
Height: 8"
Gauge:
3.5 sts/ 4.5 rows

CO 70 stitches using circular needles.
Join being careful not to twist your cast on and knit 2 rounds.
Purl 1 round.
K 21 rounds (about 5").
*K12, K2tog, repeat from * around.
K 1 round.
*K11, K2tog, repeat from* around.
K 1 row.
*K10, K2tog, repeat from* around.
K 1 round.
*K9, K2tog, repeat from* around.
*K8, K2tog, repeat from* around.
*K7, K2tog, repeat from* around.
*K6, K2tog, repeat from* around.
*K5, K2tog, repeat from* around.
*K4, K2tog, repeat from* around.
*K3, K2tog, repeat from* around.
*K2, K2tog, repeat from* around.
*K1, K2tog, repeat from* around.
*K2tog, repeat from* around.
Cut yarn with about a 6" tail.
Thread needle with tail and thread through remaining stitches.
Weave in ends.
