Best cast on for garter stitch

I know how to do the long tail cast on but I read it's best for stockinette stitch. Is there anohter cast on that is best for garter stitch? Thanks!

I'm a HUGE fan of LTCO but just finished a cardi that has garter hems and opted for the crochet CO. I also like that it mimics the appearance of the regular 'chain' BO (thus, the CO and BO match) and is even referred to as 'the bind-off CO' in some refs. Being garter works very wide, you need to use a CO that has sufficient stretch. Knitted and cable COs look great (I use both where applicable) but they're known for their sturdiness and might not be wide enough to give elasticity. Altho you could work it in a larger ndl and then go down a sz or two for your garter sts.

I use long tail CO for almost everything. For garter stitching, I knit the first row after as the WS so the RS starts with the purl bump. I find that looks good, especially the loose gauge that I knit at.

its very subjective!

Channel island cast on is one that has been, traditionally, followed by garter.

The real answer is: What do you want out of your cast on?

and what cast on do you know?

and are you willing to learn new cast on's?

there are at least 40 cast on's out there (since i know 40, and i know i don't know them All!)

One Page you can find is Page 4 of my cast on tutorial-- it has a bunch of links to OTHER BLOGS, web sights, and books.. so that you can learn about the 40 cast on's i know about.
(i have even started to add YouTube video's of my own for cast ons/ and different methods of casting on.

in some cases, a different cast on is just a different method.. sling shot, thumb and pop gun(aka Maine) are three different methods for creating a long tail cast on.

Once completed, all three methods LOOK identical.

There are a world of cast ons.. and many cast ons will work well with garter stitch.. (i like a small picot cast on with garter.. its very stretch.. but tedious to knit!)
