Same thing. With a patten you're usually casting on a different number (more stitches) for a man's sock. It works the same way. My DH hasn't had any problems with the socks I make for him. He's a size 9. Of course, he's the only man I've knit for so far and I was able to keep sizing the sock while I was making it. But, it did work out the same way.
