Size 11 womens shoe - OMG HELP ME!!!

Okay, so a friend of the family just graduated from FSU and I am making her a pair of socks. She wears a size 11 women's shoe and I have NO IDEA how big I should make the sock. I've ask.com'd it and nowhere can I figure out long to make the foot!!! I wear a 7.5 so trying it on isn't doing me much good. The hubby wears a men's 10.5. Can anyone out there in knittinghelp land help me???? Thanks!!!

It will be made the same way..whichever style you choose, but the foot will be longer.

The basic sock pattern that I learned way back when told me to knit the foot until it was about 2" shorter than the length [toe to heel] of the foot.

So if you're 7.5, measure your foot's length and subtract 2". Grab a friend with a larger foot and measure her foot, subtract 2".

And, since this will be such a larger foot length for a ladies' sock pattern, I'd make it 1.5" to subtract, instead of 2". This'll allow for the needed sideways stretch that will likely be needed for this larger-than-usual foot.

This is how I'd approach it, anyway.

PS - Many times, you'll find that [especially for men's sizes] the size of shoe corresponds loosely with the length of the foot in inches. But this isn't carved-in-stone.

It says that a size 11 shoe is about 10.3-10.5 inches. That sounds about right; my foot is a size 10 and it is just less than 10 inches.

Your friend will appreciate these socks very much! You have no idea how frustrating it is for ladies with larger feet to find socks that fit comfortably. I wear men's socks, otherwise my toes poke holes in them within a month.

With all the socks I've ever made I make the foot the same number of inches as the person's shoe size. For instance, I wear a size 7 - I make the sock 7" before the toe decrease. My mom and sister wear an 8 - knit to 8" before toe decrease. Friend is an 8.5 - 8.5" before toe decrease, etc. It's worked every time. I'd knit to 11" before toe decrease. At least 10.5.

I wear a size 10, and my foot measures 9 1/2 inches. I knit a 71/2 inch foot before the toe decreases. Good luck.

The book "Knit Socks!" by Betsy McCarthy says women's shoe size 11-14 would need a sock knit 10-5/8" to 11-1/2". You've had a variety of replies here. Hope you can come up with a consensus.

Same thing. With a patten you're usually casting on a different number (more stitches) for a man's sock. It works the same way. My DH hasn't had any problems with the socks I make for him. He's a size 9. Of course, he's the only man I've knit for so far and I was able to keep sizing the sock while I was making it. But, it did work out the same way.

I am a size 8 but a 9 feels so good I buy a size 10.
I am a 10 and I usually when making booties or socks out of heavier yarn make it to the exact length, I put it on and see when I should start making the toe. The thinner socks yarns I do what the patterns tell me for sizing, but they are usually the length of my foot without being smaller in inches.
