I have a question

I'm making a hat and for 8 rounds I do dc and join at the top of ch 3 (ch 3 counts as first dc)
Round 9 is a turning round - ch 1, sc in each dc around; join, turn

Do I join in the beginning ch 1 or the first sc when I get to the end of the round.

Round 10 and subsequent rounds - ch 1, sc in each sc, join

I also wonder what is the purpose of the turning round. Other patterns just continue without turning one round when starting the cuff.

You would join into the first single crochet, not in the chain 1.

I am not familiar with this particular pattern, but my guess is that the purpose of the turn is so that when you turn up the cuff of the hat, the right side of the crocheting is visible instead of the wrong side.

MGM - thanks so much. The pattern is for/from Save the Children. One more question - Won't I have one less stitch/sc (35) now since I'm no longer doing the chain 3 which counted as a dc (36).
Crocheting can sometimes be so confusing (to me!)

No, because you would then do your first stitch of the new round into the same stitch that you joined in on the last round.

MGM, the chart is excellent. I wish there was something similar for crocheting in the round - it seems to me that a lot of patterns leave out details that are assumed to be known when it comes to joining rounds and starting the next round.

The starting or turning chains and stitch counts would be the same in rectilinear or round crochet the only difference is if you turn or just rise to the next round after the slip stitch join.

You can also crochet as if you are working on a set of circular needles; you join at the end of the row and rise to the next row making a tube fabric as for a sleeve.
