Please help.. what does 4 times mean?

I am obviously very new to knitting. I am working on a pair of baby booties I am now on row 3 and the pattern reads: P12 4 times, m1, p12 - 33 sts. Does the 4 times mean to purl those 12 stitches 4 times so that the there would be 48 stitches total in in the 12 stitches? And then when done continue on with the m1, p12. That then would finish the row? Sorry to bother. Ever hopeful, Shana

It seems like something was left out in that set of instructions. It would not say P12 4 times. Why not just say P 48 (4X12)? And it says you end up with 33 stitches at the end of that row. Is there a place where we can look at the line in context on line? If not check what you have given us there, is that exactly what it says?

Hmmm... no you should be left with 33 sts at the end of the row. If you p12 4 times that's 36 already, then another 12... If you can copy exactly how that row reads, or have a link to the pattern it would be useful. I'm thinking the 4 times refers to the m1, or (Kx sts, m1) 4 times.

The row actually says:

P12, (m1, p1) 4 times, m1, p12 – 33 sts

The m1,p1 is what you do 4 times, after the initial p12. Then you continue the directions with m1, p12.

The count will be: 12 + 8 + 1 + 12 = 33

The 4 times refers to the (m1,p1). So here's what you do:
P12, m1,p1,m1,p1,m1,p1,m1,p1,m1,p12=33 stitches.
